History and Eligibility
A Brief History…

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) has a rich tradition in enhancing the lives of millions through its community service programs and special projects. From providing free phone cards to the nation's active-duty military personnel to raising money for the World War II memorial, the VFW is there.

Membership in the VFW nationwide has declined over the past decade. In 1992, there were 2.1 million VFW members in the United States—in 2002, the organization had about 1.8 million regular members and about 700,000 members in its women's auxiliaries.

To aid in preserving the VFW motto of “honoring the dead by helping the living,” a plan to expand membership was launched. In August 2001, for the first time in its history, VFW members voted at a national convention to give posts the option of allowing men's auxiliaries.

Eligibility…

Membership in the men's auxiliary is open to men and boys 16 and older who are the husbands, widowers, fathers, grandfathers, sons, grandsons, brothers and half-brothers of eligible VFW members.

In July 2002, members of VFW Post 1786, Manhattan Kansas, made a motion to amend its by-laws and sponsor its own Men’s Auxiliary. The motion carried, with 100% of the members present voting in favor. On April 7, 2003, the VFW Post 1786 Men’s Auxiliary was officially charterd.
